Smooth Brome (Bromus inermis) - Smooth Brome is a perennial sod-forming grass growing 1 - 3 feet tall and produces large seeds, 1/4 inch long. It is best suited for hay, early spring pasture or silage. It has deep roots and spreads by underground rhizomes. This grass is highly palatable, high in protein content, and relatively low in crude-fiber content best planted in USDA Zones 3 - 7 for full sun to partial shade. Forage quality of smooth bromegrass compares well with other cool-season grasses, being affected primarily by stage of maturity. Smooth bromegrass one of the most widely used cool-season grass in North America especially in the corn belt and great plains. It survives periods of drought and extremes in temperature. It is generally hardier than tall fescue or orchardgrass. It can be grown on a variety of soil types, but grows best on well-drained silt-loam or clay-loam soils. It is fairly tolerant of alkalinity and somewhat tolerant of salinity and acidity but will perform best at a soil pH between 6.0 and 7.0. A moist, firm seedbed is required for smooth bromegrass. Most often planted in spring, smooth bromegrass may also be planted in late summer, when weather conditions usually are more favorable. Seed may be either drilled or broadcast. Drilling is preferred because it provides a more uniform depth of planting. Plant seed 1/4 - 1/2 inch deep. Generally, when seeding bromegrass alone, rates of 12 - 16 lb per acre are sufficient.

  • HARDY PERENNIAL PASTURE GRASS: Smooth Brome is a perennial, sod-forming cool-season grass that grows 1 - 3 feet tall and spreads by underground rhizomes. It is widely used for hay, early spring pasture, silage, forage production, and long-term pasture stands.
  • HIGH QUALITY FORAGE: This grass is highly palatable, high in protein, and relatively low in crude fiber, making it a valuable forage option for livestock grazing and hay production. Forage quality compares well with other cool-season grasses and is best when harvested at the right maturity stage.
  • DROUGHT & TEMPERATURE TOLERANT: Smooth Brome survives periods of drought and extreme temperature changes and is generally hardier than tall fescue or orchardgrass. Its deep roots support persistence, resilience, and dependable growth in suitable pasture and hay fields.
  • ADAPTABLE COOL SEASON GRASS: One of the most widely used cool-season grasses in North America, Smooth Brome is especially common in the Corn Belt and Great Plains. It grows best in USDA Zones 3 - 7 in full sun to partial shade.
  • PLANTING & SOIL GUIDELINES: Smooth Brome grows on a variety of soil types but performs best in well-drained silt-loam or clay-loam soils with a pH of 6.0 - 7.0. Plant into a moist, firm seedbed at 1/4 - 1/2 inch deep. Seeding rate: 12 - 16 lbs per acre.
